sippy cups and tears

When I alluded to the new "Baby" phase we are moving into, I should have clarified we are diving head first. It's been an exhausting week. I am trying to ween Reese to a sippy cup {part-time}, and then the sweet baby who last week napped with no problems now screams bloody murder when I lay him in his crib.
I totally understand that when can't see me he thinks I'm gone. I also understand that he knows if he screams for ten minutes I'm going to get him out and rock him. We are undergoing a battle of the wills here at the Beasley house. And I think Reese is winning.

We went to the doctor yesterday. Reese is fine. However, I took the opportunity to chat with Dr. Greer about our frustrating lack of progress with the sippy cup. He basically said that Reese is learning to manipulate his environment and that includes me. He knows that if he doesn't want the cup, I'm eventually going to relent and give him the bottle. I certainly don't want him to dehydrate!

I mentioned dehydration to Dr. Greer and he said, "Elizabeth, have you ever seen a starving child in Ethiopia who won't eat broccoli?" Yeah, yeah, I get it. If he gets thirsty enough he'll drink from the cup. Battle on.

bennett hated the sippy cup at first too. i used several different ones, but i first started with the sippy cup form of his born free bottles (came in the "starter set"). then we tried the nuby soft spout one that are kind of fat - they worked well bc they were similar to a bottle but they leaked. then we moved on to avent (they come in packs of two, have handles, are colors like blue and purple and green and yellow. those worked well. when he mastered the sippy cup, we used the tall playtex ones that have silly cartoons all over the sides of them (not the insulators) and they are the absolute best. never leak. and bennett's a thrower :)

i tried sippy cups randomly before he turned one, and he didnt like them. his last bottle was the night before his 1st bday, and we never looked back! like you said, a thirsty baby isnt going to turn down his milk, no matter how he can get it :)

sorry for the novel. good luck and hope this helps! let me know if you have any more questions. i might post about it with specific brands when i am home after the weekend. lots of people have asked :)
