under the weather

We are still sick. Bunky still sounds like a barking seal and I have a sinus infection. After self treating myself for six weeks with a combo of Mucinex and Benadryl, I decided I might ought to go to the doctor. One steroid shot, an antibiotic, some nose spray, and a new Allegra prescription should have me on the road to recovery soon.

While I was there, I also picked up a Nebulizer for Reese. We started breathing treatments tonight so I am VERY hopeful this croupy crud will be gone before the weekend is over. I don't know how much more I can take. Every time he starts coughing/wheezing my heart stops beating. Oh the joys of motherhood.

Lofton's primary concern is his sleep (Lofton's, not Reese's). When Reese woke up at five AGAIN this morning, Lofton said, "How long til he moves back to his own room?" My reply, "Never. But anytime you want to move out you go right ahead." End of discussion.

I hope y'all are staying dry. This weather is the pits. And my rapidly growing son is quickly outgrowing all his pants. Wearing any type of one piece outfit in a six month size is out of the question. His torso is too long. This morning I put him in a pair of overalls that had NEVER BEEN WORN. Nope. Too short. He REWORE a pair of pants. I was embarrassed. We pride ourselves on being the best dressed kid on class at school. Please Spring, hurry. We need new clothes and I don't want to buy more long pants.

steroids

My son is following in the footsteps of Roger Clemens and A-Rod. We are now on steriods. I really felt like this was the only way we were going to kick this bout with croup. His coughing is still frequent and he's beginning to wheeze a little.

At the rate he already eats, these steriods could push him towards a full steak dinner by tomorrow! When Lofton took him to the doctor Tuesday he was up to 18 pounds six ounces. I'm really not even surprised at his rapid growth anymore. I'm just counting on his future NFL career making me a rich woman in my old age.

My carnivore.

boys weekend

My mom packed up and headed to Mississippi this weekend so I invited the boys to come stay with us for the night. We hadn't seen Jackson since Christmas, and Daddy hadn't seen Reese since MLK, so a visit was much needed.

I had lots of fun hanging out and doing nothing with my four favorite men. Daddy Buck was amazed by how big Reese is getting and he loved watching all his new tricks. He even watched Reese hoover down eat some sweet potatoes for the first time last night.

Lofton took Jackson DRIVING for the first time. Lofton was horrified to find out that Jackson was 15 and had never driven. Being the brave brother in law he is, he volunteered to take Jackson to the store parking lot to practice. I'm told it was quite the adventure. Evidently Uncle J is heavy on the gas. He also is not very adept at backing up. Must be genetic. Sorry, no pictures of that adventure. Bunky, Daddy Buck, and I were safe at home in Opelika-- which is where I plan on staying anytime Jackson is on the open road.

beautiful baby

Brennan

After a sleepless night (see below), we packed up and headed out early this morning to attend Brennan's dedication in Anniston. The little man always makes me smile because he is literally the happiest, most pleasant baby ever. And he chuckles like an old man. I love it!

Attack of the bear

Last night was a sleepless night for all of the Beasley family. I have told y'all before about our womb bear. It was a savior for many MANY nights when we first started putting Reese to sleep in his crib. Now that he's gotten older we don't use it very often, but it still sits in the corner of his bed.

Flash forward to last night. I had washed a load of Reese's stuff late yesterday afternoon and was too lazy to get it out of the dryer. Included in the load was the cover for the wedge he has been sleeping on. It is the same wedge he slept on when he first came home from the hospital, it's just that now he sleeps on it belly down. Having his head elevated seems to help him breathe a little better. So last night Lofton put Reese to bed in his crib without the wedge. About two in the morning we were aroused from our slumber by a loud shrieking noise coming from Reese's bedroom so Lofton got up to go check on him. What he found was the womb bear mauling our son. Somehow Reese had rolled over and bumped into the bear in his sleep. The bear then fell on top of Reese's face. When Lofton found him he was literally being attacked. He had his feet kicking and his arms flailing about, but he just couldn't get that darn bear off his face.

Lofton took the bear off and of course Reese was wide awake. Lofton tried (or so he says) to get Reese back to sleep. I then took my turn. I knew it was hopeless when I peaked into the crib and Reese was laying on his back, feet propped up on the side of the crib, grinning at me. After MULTIPLE attempts to get him back to sleep I gave up and brought him into our bed with us. Needless to say the three of us did not sleep much after that.

Happy Valentine's Day

Happy Love Day! Who wouldn't want to wake up to this kind of love on Valentine's Day?

After some serious stretching we spent some time playing in the bed this morning. We also did some heavy shopping with Aunt Ashley while Lofton was at work. I got Reese some ADORABLE spring outfits.

I hope y'all are spending the day with someone you love!

shots

As I mentioned on Thursday, Reese got his four month shots. It is the same series he got when he went for his two month shots.

Reese was fine on Thursday night and great for my mom on Friday. I gave him Tylenol yesterday when I fed him his early bottle at six, but then didn't continue during the day because I thought everything was clear.

Rookie mistake--should've kept up the Tylenol. Last night, Reese felt a little warm. When Cassie sat down to feed him around six, she mentioned he felt a little hot and so went and grabbed the Tylenol and the thermometer. I dosed him quickly and stuck the thermometer under his arm. I was more than a little alarmed to see the numbers rise so quickly, when it went over 100 degrees I started to have mild heart palpitations. He has never run a significant fever before. He had a low grade temp when he got the stomach virus, but nothing scary. I know that temps under the arm run a degree low, so to have a four month old with a temp of 101.5 was frightful.

I immediately got a cold washcloth to put on his head and called my mom. We monitored his temp for about forty five minutes and it barely budged. Reese however was acting perfectly normal. He wasn't abnormally cranky, there were no signs of lethargy or pupil dilation (Can you tell I went and grabbed my baby book?) At seven I gave in and paged Dr. Greer. He called me back four minutes later. After a brief recap of symptoms and behaviors he told me everything we were doing was perfect and to keep monitoring him for the signs I mentioned before. He said for some reason, some babies have a hard time with four months shots even though they had no problems with the same shots at two months. He said if his temp rose above 104 to call and he would meet us at the hospital.

We woke Reese up at ten to dose him before we went to bed. I checked him twice during the night (he was in our room so I just had to crawl to the end of the bed and peak in his crib) to make sure he was breathing.

He seems to be his normal bi-polar self today. We took a long nap in our bed this afternoon and I even gave him a tiny bit of juice when he woke up. I still can't belive my baby drinks juice and eats from a spoon. Can time just stop right here?

friends

Two of my favorite people came to visit this weekend. When Nonna left on Saturday morning (HUGE thanks to my mom who came and kept Reese on Friday. She did laundry, cleaned, and took us to dinner on Friday night. My mama is the best!), Lofton, Reese, and I ran a few errands and waited anxiously for Cassie and Hugh's arrival. When I say I waited anxiously, I'm not kidding. I sat by the window like a little kid, watching and waiting for them to drive up.

We had a wonderful and eventful time. Cassie is my oldest and dearest friend in the world. She knows me like no one else, and although we don't see each other as often as we'd like, she always makes me smile. Lofton says we act like two very silly teenage girls when we are together. I love Hugh as well-- he is soon to start med school and I can't wait to have my own George Clooney in the family. I've even more excited that they'll be in Augusta. It is much closer to Opelika than Savannah.

Thanks for a great visit, friends. We can't wait for you to come back!

meal time

As I mentioned before, we are slowly adapting spoon feedings into our diet. Thus far we have not been very successful. Here are a few pictures from Wednesday night:

four months

A quick post to update you on my FOUR month old. Can you believe it? Me neither.

We went to see Dr. Greer today. And by we I mean me, Reese, and my mom (Nonna). She came to town to keep Reese tomorrow. At least that's what we pretended. She really just wanted to go see Dr. Greer. In case I've failed to mention- we love him.

We got our yucky shots and Reese was a trooper. He barely cried.
Here are his vital stats:

Weight: 17 pounds, nine ounces (And yes, we went to the doctor exactly a week ago and he weighed 16 pounds, 13 ounces. What can I say? I'm rearing a linebacker.)
Height: A hair shy of 27 inches
Head 42.5 cm around

I had two very important questions to ask the doctor today. Number one, is he too big? Dr. Greer said absolutely not. He is in the 90% for weight and 95% for height. Both of these are consistent with the percentiles he was in at birth. So, Mrs. Samuels and Mrs. Pigg will be happy to know that I'm letting go of my feeding issues. In my defense, we were admonished in week five when Reese had gained three pounds in a relatively short amount of time.

My second question was about his ribs sticking out. They do, but evidently that's normal. Something about excess gas causing them to protrude a little.

I'll post pictures from our first attempt at spoon feeding tomorrow....

Cassie and Hugh

Two of our most favorite people are coming on Saturday. The last time you saw us Reese looked like this and I was growing rapidly.

We are both looking a whole lot cuter now (Reese and I, not Cassie, she looked positively perfect). Thinking back though-- I really wasn't that big then, at least not compared to the final result. I think it was having to squeeze into a size four dress that did me in.

I digress, Cassie and Hugh we are so SO excited you are coming to visit. Can't wait to see you Saturday!!!

yuck, part II

The Beasley family will emerge from quarantine tomorrow and enter back into regular life. It has been a long few days.

Lofton got sick late Thursday night/early Friday morning. I was already at home on Friday spending the day with a recovering Reese, so luckily I was able to tend to both men at the same time. Reese and I hung out in the bedroom all day and Lofton stayed confined to the couch and the hall bathroom. Whenever I walked by I doused anything he touched with Clorox spray.

It was not enough to spare me from the wrath of the stomach bug though. Around six on Friday night i started feeling a little ill. I told myself the symptoms were fake-- I only thought I was getting sick because everyone else was sick. Around seven, I moved Reese to the floor with all his play things-- safety first, I couldn't leave him on the bed and rush to the bathroom.

Around eight I had to walk into the living room to tell Lofton I was sick too. You can imagine his response. Since he hadn't been sick since mid-morning he took over baby duty. It was a very long Friday night and Saturday morning. I won't go into details, but I will say that it was very de ja vu like because exactly a year ago I was doing the exact same thing except for a different reason. A year ago yesterday I came home from school sick (and thought it was a stomach bug) only to realize I was pregnant on February 2, 2008. My how far we've come in a year!

I finally emerged this morning and Lofton and spent the day sanitizing the house. We've scrubbed the bathrooms, washed all the clothes, towels, and bed linens in hot water, and cloroxed anything else we touched.

A special thanks to our Mimi for coming to keep Reese on Wednesday and Thursday. We are so sorry you got sick too!
