and then it was over

My family packed up and headed South yesterday morning.  We were oh so sad to see them leave, but delight in knowing they'll be back soon.

Little man enjoyed his Christmas more than he ever has before.  He cautiously crept out of the bedroom Christmas morning with Lofton holding him tight, but leaped to the ground when he saw Santa's bounty.  A train table & new trains, a horn, lots of cars, a construction hat, books, and much more.

Emo and Buck gave him many, many presents but his favorite hands down is his Auburn football uniform.

It took much convincing to get him to take it off last night.  After two days of wear it needs washing.  What a sight Reese was, trolling Target in full pads and helmet, yesterday.

Christmas 2011 is in the books for us.  We cleaned up the stockings, put up the twinkly lights, and carted the trees outside.  Yep, it's all gone.

But we've got lots to keep us busy the next few days as we count down to the New Year.  A birthday, a visit with friends, and some good ole snuggle time with Harry.

Meet Harry.  Our new addition.  He's soft and cuddly; two requirements in Reese's book.  He's joined Mr. Rabbit, Leo the Lion & Peter Rabbit as a nighttime companion.

The bed is getting crowded, friends.

good tidings

The final presents have been delivered {thank you UPS}, wrapped or carefully hidden, and our advent calendar is down to the final two days.  It's hard to believe but after weeks of preparation the most wonderful time of the year is upon us.

My parents are on their way and aside from a grocery store adventure sure to cause me anxiety {i think I'm borderline agoraphobic} all my last minute errands have been accomplished.

What hasn't been marked off my list, won't be. And I'm a-okay with that.  I'm ready to settle down and enjoy this special time with some very special people.

Merry Christmas to you & yours from our little family.

a gift

Lofton and I aren't big on gift giving to each other.  Primarily because we put so much work and money into house re-doing that there isn't much moolah left to go around.  Also, with our anniversary, Christmas & my birthday being separated by only 12 days... it could get pricey real quick.

With that being said, i stumbled upon a little something that I had to get Lofton for our anniversary.  I'm so blown away by how it turned out that I wanted to share.  I wish you could see it in person because it really is stunning.

It's a watercolor portrait of our old house.

Obviously, this is a picture of the picture but you get an idea of it's awesomeness.  I randomly found a vendor on etsy, sent her a photo from our real estate listing, and after a few emails back and forth to answer some questions about colors/porch furnishings/plants this is what I was sent.

It's just the perfect rendering of all the work Lofton put into the house.  No matter what the new owner changes to make it hers we can always remember what it looked like when it was ours.

whirlwind

The last week has been whew.  I'm a little bit glad it's over and a lot of bit glad to slow down for a break.

Pete the Pirate.  A gift from one of my teacher friends.
Between Christmas happenings at home {neighborhood party, luminaries, pre-k Christmas program and party} and happenings at school {poetry recitations, ornament making, testing, parties}, I'm spent.

snuck away to stare at this face for a anniversary date
I've literally been falling into bed at night and dragging myself out the next morning for work.

I never do that.  Ever.

Pre-K program.  Humorous.
But this morning?  Blogging from bed while drinking my coffee.  And enjoying some cartoons with my favorite companion.  No school for us today!  And we are excited.

And we have lots of countdowns going on:

  • Countdown until Emo, Buck & J-Man's arrival- 2 days
  • Christmas/Jesus's Birthday- 3 days
  • Our visit to see Tiger Baby, her mama & the doctor- 9 days.
Woot!

six

Tomorrow the hubs and I will celebrate six years of wedded bliss.

Six years of pizza dinners on Valentine's Day, house renovating adventures, and more blessings that I can count.

Six years of wonderful.

campaign 2029

Here is my star, practicing for his Heisman:

Since it's looking like he isn't going to be the giant we initially projected, we're grooming a QB.

Basically, he's a stud athlete.  But a smart one...

houston, we have a problem

Lofton and I have lived a pretty blissful existence these last three years. While other parents struggled with babies who crawled out of cribs, or toddlers who wouldn’t stay in bed, we’ve smirked... scoffed, even, at those people because our sweet boy always was content to stay in his bed until we went in to get him. Sure, he doesn’t sleep at night, but he’s always been happy just to yell our names {over and over again} until we rescued him from the bear cave. Until now.

Yesterday morning, I followed my usual morning routine {except for my back issue but that’s a whole separate blog post}. When I walked down the very dark hall to get Reese up, I was startled, quite literally, to find the toddler standing at the end of the hall. Ready to greet me. Shoot.

I told him he surprised me, explained that it was dangerous to get out of bed without us knowing because the house is so dark, and we went on our merry way.

Except not.

THIS morning, Chuck Norris climbed himself out of bed, walked down the long dark hall, went into the kitchen, opened the pantry and then got himself some fruit snacks. Oh yes he did.

Hell’s bells. This is an issue.

captured at last

The journey to getting the photos I'm about to share has been a nightmare.  I scheduled a session with a local photographer for the last weekend in September.  I planned our outfits, rearranged our schedules and, most importantly, made sure our hair was cut and colored.

Then our photographer cancelled.  At the last minute.  I was irritated {though my irritation paled in comparison to Lofton's}, but she offered to reschedule for a weekday afternoon a few weeks later.  Fine.

Then Reese got the stomach virus the day of the rescheduled shoot.  Sigh.  I called and emailed.  She later facebook messaged me that she wouldn't be able to reschedule us until after the New Year.  We were furious.

I called around, did more research and stumbled upon the amazing Jamie Burnett.  She was super sweet and super accommodating of my desire to get these done ASAP.  My heart was set on fall photos.

Our first scheduled date was a failure.  Rain and the time changing busted our plan.  But finally, last weekend, we actually had pictures taken.

These are only the ones she sent me as a preview... there are lots more to see.  And I am so excited.  Like if I was the kind of person who typed in all caps to show excitement... I would do it now.

Enjoy!

I die.

turkey day 2011

Long live five day Thanksgiving breaks.  Is there someplace I can teach were five days off is a regular occurrence?  It's been delightful.

Sure, there's been lots of driving to and from LG AND there was that game yesterday that we'll just gloss over, but otherwise it's been just delightful.  We've had lots of family time, lots of relaxing, and lots of house projects.

Drywall has been hung by my handy husband, so my parents are well on their way to having a new bedroom by Christmas and I even got a start on Christmas decorating.

I will admit this is probably the first time I've felt sad about not being in the old house.  Something about a historical home decorated for Christmas always felt so magical.  Now I'm fumbling around trying to figure out where to put things in this new place.  I'll get there.... right?

And now we start the push toward Christmas.  I know the next few weeks will go really fast.  There are lots of things going on at school and at home {-- can we say six years of wedded bliss!!}.

He can't believe it either...

And now I'm off to enjoy my last few hours of break. This rainy weather calls for some chili making.

thankful for ducks

As part of my embrace life as it is attitude I've tried to really reflective on the things I'm thankful for at all times, not just here at Thanksgiving time.  With that being said, today I am especially thankful for having a long break from work to enjoy this boy--

We've spent today baking, running errands, cleaning and, of course, having a lunch date with our favorite daddy.

My child may be sassy and temperamental at times, but he is, without a a doubt, my most favorite person to spend the day with.

Case in point:

On the way to Target this morning we passed Cock of the Walk, a local restaurant that we drive past at least once a day.  In the Spring, we became particularly attached to a flock of ducks that inhabited their parking lot.  The ducks would alternate between Cock of the Walk and the field directly across the street.  We saw their babies grow bigger, and often traffic would come to a complete stop as the mama's and babies would cross the road. At the end of the summer the ducks moved on.

Today, even though the ducks have been gone for a long time, Reese asked about them when we drove past.  He wanted to know where his duck friends had gone and I told him that they were somewhere warm, that ducks don't enjoy living in places where it gets cold.  Sweet boy, with his child like view of the world, said, "Then we need to get the ducks some jackets at Target, Mama.  Do they have little duck jackets there?"

And that is why I adore him so.

Happy Thanksgiving, my friends.  Safe travels!

here we go again

We have a bit of a mess on our hands...

Ignore the toddler and look into the actual bedroom.  That's the real mess. Although I would characterize Reese as a "hot mess" a majority of the time!

Here is a better view of our current project; the back bedroom, otherwise known as Emo's room.

As you can see, there is was lovely black and white striped wall paper scheme going on.  Kind of like being in prison.  The original plan was to strip the wall paper BUT three hours later-- and three layers later-- we abandoned plan a for plab b: new sheetrock.  Here's were I say again that it is pretty amazeballs to have a handy husband.

And so, we have grand plans to get this room in tip top condition before my parent's come for Christmas.  And by we, I primarily mean Lofton.

say it ain't so...

At 1:33p.m., my sweet baby brother becomes an adult.  It’s hard for this big sister to believe considering in my heart he’s still a gap-toothed little boy; with big round eyes and pants pulled up so high they almost touched his armpits.

The towering teenager who hugs me now is still pretty adorable, though.  And he makes me proud, every single day, to be his big sister.

And it doesn’t hurt that he stills calls me Lizzie.  Look how handsome!

Happy Birthday, baby brother.  As a gift to me I'd like to you NOT to grow up.  Thanks.

and then it was over

Why is it that three day weekends fly by extra fast?

Sigh....  It's almost Thanksgiving, it's almost Thanksgiving....

We headed home Thursday after work so that we could wake up rested Friday morning and ready to hit the air show.  There was a brief detour through Evergreen to have dinner with my favorite long ago neighbors, the McMillan's.  You know how in your perfect fantasy life you would have an amazing best friend neighbor, who every afternoon you'd share your day with while having a delightful cocktail or glass of wine?

That's my Melissa.

It was so random when they happened to move in two houses down from our Auburn house, but also so perfect.  I miss her dearly and every time we see them I'm reminded of that fact.  And I cry when we leave.  And then beg Lofton to get a job with Rigby so we can move next door to them again.

Rigby pretty much put it perfectly when he said, as our three children and a hodgepodge of dogs ran around, "I love that we always pick up right where we left off.  It's like we've never been apart.  Which is weird since we've added three kids to the mix."

Drying my eyes and moving on...

We made it home around 11:30 Thursday night.  Mama was up waiting and Daddy drug himself out of bed to greet the now wide awake toddler.  Reese chose to sleep with his Emo so Lofton and I made a hasty escape.  Six hours later we were all up!  Cause that's how we roll at the Buckley house...

The Blue Angels show was amazing.  Even more so since Lofton had never seen them fly.  The benefit of the homecoming show at the base is that there are planes flying all day.  We spread out our blanket and enjoyed the beautiful weather, air show and some snacks.  Corn dogs, funnel cakes and cheese fries oh my!

And then after a few hours there was napping-

Reese was not surprisingly underwhelmed by the Blue Angels.  I've learned not to expect much from him because he is typically underwhelmed by most things I think he will be super excited about!

Saturday morning was filled with some unfortunate stomach problems from our favorite toddler.  We aren't sure if it was a touch of a bug, or an over indulgence in corn dog the day before.  Regardless, Mama flew into our bedroom at ten to six requesting new underwear for Reese.  He had gone potty... on her feet, I think.  And then he threw up.  In my hands.  It was delightful.

Lofton and I decided to relish in a rare opportunity to pass the sick toddler off on someone else for a few hours and hit the mall.  Boo needed some pants {and shopping options are non existent in O-town}, and Lofton and I both were coveting new shoes.  Success was had on all fronts.

We rested the remainder of the day. With our rosy cheeks.

Because stomach problems are the pits :(

One more thing before I let you go--

My very favorite friend in the whole world is having a baby all of her own.  Cassie and Hugh are going to be delighting in my favorite adventure come April.  I'm just over the moon with joy!  And to make it even better, they found out Friday that Tiger Baby {as Reese has affectionately named it} is going to be wearing ruffles, polka dots, and pearls.  I die.  Side note: Reese on the other hand is a tad bit disappointed because he thought Tiger Baby was going to be an actual tiger.  Hells bells.  Oh to be a toddler again....

Happy week my friends!

nemo

Hells's bells, {as my dear Cassie likes to say} this nasty little cough Reese developed about two weeks ago is still hanging on.

And so, after listening to him hack {and wheeze} day and night AND then noticing that what he is hacking up is a lovely shade of greenish-gray we headed back to our doctor this afternoon.

Introducing--

Nemo.  The silly pharmacist called him Bubbles, but all the cool toddlers know that fish are Nemos.

We have our finger's crossed that a few days of treatments combined with some good old fashioned Incredible Hulk roids will knock this frog out for good.  Reese is beyond tired of ribbiting.

Cross your fingers too, will you?

someone missed the memo

So much for gaining an extra hour of sleep.  The toddler clearly missed the memo-- as in he's basically gotten up around 4:30 for the last two mornings.  I mean, really, can we please get some sleep around here? He even fell asleep for nap yesterday at 10:30.  On the couch.  Which has never happened.  Ever.

Sigh.

Needless to say my Monday started much earlier than I would have liked.  But, on a positive, it means we are much closer to Thursday.  Yippee!

I love a day off, especially when it falls on a Friday.  The Beasley family we'll be making the pilgrimage to Pensacola for a weekend of family time.  Pretty sure it was June when we last went home...

first time for everything

Boo has his first cold.  Kind of hard to believe right?  Really though.  He's never really had a hacking cough plus runny nose.  Mundane illnesses aren't really his style.

He is pretty pitiful.  Coughing is obviously painful and it also makes it hard to rest.  For all of us!

I took this right after he told me that he was tired of the frog living in his throat. Doesn't he look pissed?

Ribbit.

And shh! Don't tell our pediatrician who told us specifically NOT to give him cough medicine BUT I gave him half of a children's {four to six years old} dose before nap.  And he is sleeping.  Without waking up to cough.  Hallelujah.  I mean, really, at 40 pounds Tank Beasley is surely the same weight as most children four to six year's old.

Just this once Mama trumps doctor.

someone else's words

I'm a bit under the weather.  It appears that my eighteen lovelies have some super germs which have decided to attack all at once.  Yuck.

Moving on...

I found this article, or piece of an article, online and wanted to share.  It's a great reminder for all us Mamas to live in the moment.  Enjoy!

Raising Children
by Anna Quindlen, Newsweek Columnist and Author

All my babies are gone now. I say this not in sorrow but in disbelief.

I take great satisfaction in what I have today: three almost-adults, two taller than I am, one closing in fast.Three people who read the same books I do and have learned not to be afraid of disagreeing with me in their opinion of them, who sometimes tell vulgar jokes that make me laugh until I choke and cry, who need razor blades and shower gel and privacy, who want to keep their doors closed more than I like.

Who, miraculously, go to the bathroom, zip up their jackets and move food from plate to mouth all by themselves. Like the trick soap I bought for the bathroom with a rubber ducky at its center, the baby is buried deep within each, barely discernible except through the unreliable haze of the past.

Everything in all the books I once poured over is finished for me now. Penelope Leach., T. Berry Brazelton., Dr. Spock. The ones on sibling rivalry and sleeping through the night and early-childhood education, all grown obsolete. Along with Goodnight Moon, and Where the Wild Things Are, they are battered, spotted, well used. But I suspect that if you flipped the pages, dust would rise like memories. What those books taught me, and finally what the women on the playground, and the well-meaning relations -- well what they taught me was that they couldn't really teach me very much at all.

Raising children is presented at first as a true-false test, then becomes multiple choice, until finally, far along, you realize that it is an endless essay. No one knows anything.

One child responds well to positive reinforcement, another can be managed only with a stern voice and a timeout. One child is toilet trained at 3, his sibling at 2.

When my first child was born, parents were told to put baby to bed on his belly so that he would not choke on his own spit-up. By the time my last arrived, babies were put down on their backs because of research on sudden infant death syndrome.

To a new parent this ever-shifting certainty is terrifying, and then soothing. Eventually you must learn to trust yourself. Eventually the research will follow.

I remember 15 years ago pouring over one of Dr. Brazelton's wonderful books on child development, in which he describes three different sorts of infants: average, quiet, and active. I was looking for a sub-quiet codicil for an 18-month old who did not walk. Was there something wrong with his fat little legs? Was there something wrong with his tiny little mind? Was he developmentally delayed, physically challenged? Was I insane? Last year he went to China. Next year he goes to college. He can talk just fine. He can walk, too.

Every part of raising children is humbling, too. Believe me, mistakes were made. They have all been enshrined in the "Remember-When-Mom-Did " Hall of Fame. The outbursts, the temper tantrums, the bad language, mine, not theirs. The times the baby fell off the bed.The times I arrived late for preschool pickup. The nightmare sleepover. The horrible summer camp. The day when the youngest came barreling out of the classroom with a 98 on her geography test, and I responded, "What did you get wrong?" (She insisted I include that.) The time I ordered food at the McDonald's drive-through speaker and then drove away without picking it up from the window. (They all insisted I include that.) I did not allow them to watch the Simpsons for the first two seasons. What was I thinking?

But the biggest mistake I made is the one that most of us make while doing this. I did not live in the moment enough. This is particularly clear now that the moment is gone, captured only in photographs. There is one picture of the three of them, sitting in the grass on a quilt in the shadow of the swing set on a summer day, ages 6, 4 and 1.

And I wish I could remember what we ate, and what we talked about, and how they sounded, and how they looked when they slept that night.

I wish I had not been in such a hurry to get on to the next thing: dinner, bath, book, bed. I wish I had treasured the doing a little more and the getting it done a little less.

Even today I'm not sure what worked and what didn't, what was me and what was simply life. When they were very small, I suppose I thought someday they would become who they were because of what I'd done. Now I suspect they simply grew into their true selves because they demanded in a thousand ways that I back off and let them be. The books said to be relaxed and I was often tense, matter-of-fact and I was sometimes over the top.

And look how it all turned out. I wound up with the three people I like best in the world who have done more than anyone to excavate my essential humanity.

That's what the books never told me. I was bound and determined to learn from the experts. It just took me awhile to figure out who the experts were.

green with envy

Got a little project done this weekend.

And I basically did it all by my lonesome.  Pretty impressed with myself!

Can you tell what I did?

I painted the front door! And I'm in love with the color...

I will say that the hubs did the prep for me.  You know the cleaning, taking off the kick plate and door knocker, sanding and spackle.  But I did all the painting.  Four coats of paint to be exact.

After one coat...

And then after four...

I realize the green is pretty bright, but the blah tan house needed a pick me up.  A few seasonal plants, a trio of pumpkins, and some cutie-pie benches and we are all set for Fall.

fall break, day one

Fall Break.  Gotta love it.  Except truthfully, it would be nice to have some accompanying fall weather.  Ninety degrees and sunny doesn't exactly scream fall. But I digress.

This morning Reese and I enjoyed a leisurely breakfast {i.e, he ate breakfast in my bed while watching cartoons and I read the news} before heading out for some errand running.  Our errands were, unfortunately, unsuccessful.  I was looking for some supplies to make a fall wreath, but Hobby Lobby is the only "supply" store in the vicinity and I came up empty.

Spirits crushed, we headed over the Russell to bother Lofton.  It was my first visit to Lofton's office {i know, bad wife}.  Let's just say it lacks.... personality.  I'm adding send family photos with Lofton to work onto my to-do list.

Reese, per usual, made himself right at home.

Pretty sure he wants his own calculator now. And then he saw these:

A nice stack of orders.  Can you see the wheels churning?  Yep.  With one swift sweep of the hand they went all over the floor.  It was comical.  For me at least.

Then Daddy-O took us to lunch. Which he worked through.

Enter the pokey finger.

A sure fire way to grab someone's attention.  As a bonus it usually leaves a nice bruise to remind them of your visit.

And then we sat while Reese ate.  And we sat, and sat, and sat some more because Reese is the slowest eater in America.

An hour to eat half a pimento cheese sandwich and some chips?  Why sure.

pit stop

Well hello.  It's like I step away for a quick breath and then all of a sudden BOOM it's mid-October.

Let's catch-up, cause we've been busy!

There has been lots of front yard football playing by my little toddler tackler.

Intermixed with a brief plague of stomach yuckies.

A celebration of our favorite 29 year old! Complete with a homemade chocolate turtle cake because handsome husband is beyond deserving.

And Friday we took a field trip to the pumpkin patch!

There were pumpkins {duh!}, animals, and inflatables galore.  We enjoyed some fellowship with Reese's school friends and their parents.  And Mr. Ed...

FYI: That would be Lofton's hand NOT Reese's.  Reese hated all the animals, as did I. In fact, I worried all week about the germ issue of a petting zoo, what with our history of infectious diseases.  Luckily, Reese internalized my issues and stayed far, far away.  Whew!

And now? Well now we rest. Because we have TWO days off.  Yippee!

Our plan involves tent playing...

book reading...

lunch dates, and...

general mischievousness

Cause that's what being three is all about.

oh october, not again

Damn you October.  Why do you hate us so much?

2008- Glorious because Reese was born, yet horrific because I was so sick.
2009- The beginning of our ear infection saga.
2010- Head injury + salmonella.  Need I say more?

And now, October of 2011, poor Boo has a stomach virus.  I knew he was puny when we got him up this morning, but truthfully every morning this week has been a nightmare.  He wasn't warm in a feverish way so we shipped him off to daycare.  And not thirty minutes later Lofton called to say he was pretty sure they'd be calling within the hour... Reese was on a downhill slide. A nasty tummy virus has been running rampant at daycare so I knew it was only a matter of time.

I started frantically writing sub plans, organizing work for my kids, and then headed toward Auburn.  Unfortunately I didn't make it in time.  He had gotten sick.  On the floor.  He pitifully told me he tried to make it to the potty.  Bless him.

Luckily, my car is ground zero for random crap.  I had two towels that I covered him up with for the ride home.  Can I say that the ten minute drive felt like ten hours?  I knew I was racing the clock....

We made it to the driveway before he got sick again.  My poor shoes will never be the same.

And now we are in full disinfect while comforting the baby mode.

I learned from my parents that pallets on the floor make everything feel better, so we are chill-axin with some Handy Manny and our plastic bucket.  just.in.case. And I know this is wrong, but I find it totally heart melting that Reese keeps saying, "Oh no Mama! I think I need to bah-mit {i.e., vomit}." Literally every time he gets sick.

Poor little boo :( Fingers are crossed that this is short lived.
